My urban fall garden is finally planted!

It took me a while to find the time to get this done but I’m lucky to live in a ‘moderate’ climate in Atlanta where it was nearly 70 yesterday. This should do just fine.

Anyway, I planted some fun winter veggies in my front yard. Yes, that’s right, my front yard! Although I live in the city, I have some nice ‘hidden’ places to plant a garden. I have to plant in the front because that is where the sunshine is.

One nice way to hide it in plain sight is to let the vegetable be the greenery amongst the flowers. For example, a lot of people plant ornamental cabbage or kale in their flower beds in the winter. But, I say, why do the ornamental kind when you can do the edible kind. They are still pretty and provide a similar affect but I’ll get (hopefully) a nice head of cabbage at some point to eat!

Likewise, I have a small open area behind some bushes that you can’t really see from the street but it gets great sunlight too. Here I have planted broccoli, turnip greens and more cabbage. Yummy! I might not get a lot of production out of it, but it is fun and the kids love it too. It will even give them some incentive to try a bite of something they don’t like! That, in and of itself, is worth it!
