New Year’s Resolution

The first full week of 2014 is upon us.  The beginning of a new year always brings talk about resolutions. Most people go with the obvious choices such as becoming healthier through diet or exercise or even to commit to spending more time with family and friends. What about resolutions in the kitchen? Here are some ideas of what you can put on your New Year’s Resolution list…..

  • Make a new recipe every week – This will help keep things new and fresh in the kitchen and keep your family from getting bored with the same old things.
  • Try a new food once a month – Pick a food you have never tried, find a recipe using that ingredient and give it a try!
  • Decide to eat in instead of eating out – Not only is this less expensive but it is a lot healthier too.  Restaurant food is delicious a lot of the time because they add too much fat and salt. At home you can control these ingredients and still make a dish full of flavor. Think about your favorite restaurant meal and try to recreate it at home. You’ll surprise yourself.
  • Cook an entire meal with your family – Get everyone involved in putting dinner on the table. Kids love helping in the kitchen and it is always nice to have a couple extra hands.
  • Bake a pie or cheesecake – Even if you hate to bake or think you are no good at it, you should try your hand at a pie or cheesecake at least once! They are pretty forgiving and delicious.
  • Learn how to grill – Everyone needs to know how to grill. There is no reason to have to rely on someone else to do the cooking for you! You can do it too!
  • Throw a Party – Maybe you are afraid to entertain your friends but don’t be! Throwing a party is as easy as making a list of things to do and getting them done.  If you can plan your wedding, your child’s birthday party, or the big bash for the PTO, you can have a party of any size at your house. Pick a date, invite your guests, make your lists and have some fun!

Resolving to spend more time in the kitchen and getting outside of your comfort zone can also help support some of those more obvious New Year’s Resolutions of getting healthier and spending more time with those you love. Knock them all out by becoming more comfortable in the kitchen!
