How old is Spam?

Did you know iconHow old is Spam? Would you believe that Spam will be 76 years old this summer? I’ve never had spam so I am by no means an expert. To be honest, I have no idea how to cook with it. Is there REALLY a good way to make a dish with spam? If so, please let us know!

I’m sure Melissa is hyperventilating over the fact that “Spam” will actually be a post on our website! – Denise

Oh dear Bessie! I think I’m going to faint. Of course when I was reading the post Denise, I thought you meant that the spam in the can on the shelves was actually 76 years old. That, I would believe!! – Melissa

  • I love Spam. Always have even if my mom, earlene would never allow in my adolescent household. My Pop, Earl Caylor, taught me at a young age to equate Vienna sausages /Spam with Saltines to a expensive steak dinner.
Spam cannot be purchased in a grocery store. One can only purchase this delectable meat from a Dollar General or Family Dollar. Only small box stores carry the highest quality Spam.
To cook, lightly sprinkle skillet with olive oil. Throw in half an onion and bell pepper, sliced and diced long ways. Throw in 2 tablespoons of garlic, big sprinkle of crushed red pepper, pinch of mustard seed, splash of Worcester, and a fat tablespoon of Dukes mayo
Take Spam out of tin. Make sure to rinse the meaty block of excess fatty globs. Slice the meat long ways and place in skillet. Cook until golden on both sides.
Toast 2 pieces of toast or baguette. Set to side to “toughen up”.
Spam, green beans, beets, and potatoes go together. While the Spam cooks, open cans of beans, beets, and instant garlic potates. Heat all up.
Prepare bread with a spread of mayo and mustard. Top bread with crispy Spam, potatoes, green beans, beets. I like topping with thick Munster cheese slices
Sit outside listening to Willie Nelson with a PBR or sweet Tea. Oh yeah, soak all the juices up with lots of Dollar General saltines

    • David, I’d say that sounds amazing but I just can’t do it. However, I’ll tell you what. You make that for me in July when you are here and I’ll try it. Deal?

      • I’m laughing right now because i cannot believe this is a serious recipe! Are you really serious David? I HAVE had spam when i was growing up in Ohio. My Mom used to just fry it and put it between two pieces of wonder bread. Same with bologia.. fry it up and put it on white bread..that was breakfast on the way to school. But man you have dressed up spam for the ball man. Not convinced you can make a silk purse out of a spam sow’s ear…ha ha ha

  • If you look close you can see pieces of nose, ears and various other pieces of the pig. I don’t eat Spam – don’t care how old it is.
