What do color bread ties mean?

Have you ever wondered if there was a meaning behind the color of the ties or clips used on bread bags? Have you ever touched 10 loaves of bread in the store trying to find the softest one? Do you even care?

Well, I was reading a home tips book I found on my cookbook shelf the other day. I don’t even know where I got the book but I was browsing through it and there it was. The secret was there in black and white. I don’t think I had ever even noticed bread ties were different colors. Well, they are, and they are for a reason.

Nearly all bakers utilize the same code. Each color corresponds to the day of the week the bread was baked.

The earlier in the week = the color that is earliest in the alphabet.
Monday = Blue
Tuesday = Green
Thursday = Orange
Friday = White
Saturday = Yellow

    Why is bread not baked on Wednesdays?

    • David – that’s a good question and I have no official reason for why. My assumption is to give 2 days off during the week but spread it out so that there is fresh bread all the time. – Melissa
