Let’s be honest. Not every meal is going to take hours to prepare and look like it came from a restaurant. Why? I’m a mom, not a chef. I’m Denise, not Melissa 🙂 !!! Even though I might take short cuts, I can at least take an extra minute to make a dish LOOK as appetizing as I know it tastes. It’s all about the presentation!!
We will start with something very basic. Take for example some fresh store bought ravioli. It takes about 8 minutes to boil. You can toss it with garlic and olive oil, Alfredo sauce, pesto, or a basic marinara. Whatever floats you boat. I usually serve it to my kids with marinara. Now there are two options.
1. After the cooked ravioli is drained, you can toss it in some heated sauce and serve it in a bowl. Maybe sprinkle some grated cheese on top. Kids would be happy with this, I’m not going to lie.
Or, you could take about an extra 60 seconds and go to option 2.
2. While the ravioli is cooking, chop some basil. Heat the marinara sauce in a pan. Drain the pasta when it is done cooking. Ladle some sauce at the bottom of shallow bowl. Arrange the ravioli so each piece is laying in the sauce. (I owe this tip to my sister)! Put a bit more sauce on top of the ravioli, but don’t drown it. Sprinkle the fresh basil and freshly grated cheese on top and serve. Isn’t this way much nicer?
You can always add fresh herbs to a dish to give it a little something special. Swirl some sauce around the edge of a plate or place a piece of meat on top of a bed of mashed potatoes instead of beside it. The opportunities are endless. Consider your plate a work of art. It’s all about the presentation!
