My mom used to make this German Oven Pancake breakfast dish when I was growing up for special occasions or for groups of people. On a recent visit to see my sister, she made it for the kids and it turned out just as I remember! I couldn’t believe how easy it was because it looks much harder!
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: Prep Time – 5 min; Cook Time – 35 min.
1/4 c. butter
1 1/2 c. milk
3/4 c. flour
1/3 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. powdered sugar
Special Equipment and Other Items Needed:
Preparation of German Oven Pancakes:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place butter in 9 inch pie plate. Bake for 5 minutes until the butter melts and bubbles. Adjust the heat to 450 degrees. Pour milk, flour, sugar, eggs and salt into a bowl and mix thoroughly at medium speed until smooth. Remove pie plate from oven. Immediately pour the mix into the pie plate and return to oven. Bake for 20 minutes. Lower heat to 350 and bake 8-10 minutes until the edges are puffed and browned. A well will form in the middle. Cut into wedges and serve with syrup and powdered sugar.
Instead of powdered sugar and syrup, try these ideas out:
3 c. strawberries
2 T. sugar
Sprinkle strawberries with sugar and toss lightly. Put on top of pancakes
Cinnamon Apple Topping
3 apples, peeled, thinly sliced
1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
3 T. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3 T. butter
Toss apple slices in lemon juice, set aside. Mix brown sugar and cinnamon together in small bowl. Melt butter in medium saucepan. Stir in apples and then add the cinnamon mixture. Simmer for 15-20 minutes. Pour over pancakes and enjoy.
Serve with fruit and your favorite breakfast meat to complete your meal!
